"This lead me to the idea that superstitions may have something important behind them. Not so much as something that needs to be heeded, but something that can tell us about a culture. At some level, it looks to me like superstitions are the popular interpretation of a cultures cosmology or world view by the common man."

That is an important point. I disagree with some of the conclusions you draw from this point, but thank you for bringing it to mind nontheless.

In general, Evangelicals are superficial. We want the benefits of Christianity without having to study or understand it. That explains why we don't read much.

In defense of the bookless-brethren, we can't judge a reader by how many books he owns. For example, many people might give away books they've already read or only borrow books in the first place.

In addition, how many of us have libraries overflowing with books, but our lives aren’t overflowing with wisdom?

Application is always more important than intellectual knowledge. It's what we do with the books that matters.

For the most part, however, I would agree that we could spend a lot more time studying the Bible and Christian literature as well as non-Christian literature.

This is a basic assumption we make every time someone makes a statement. The assumption is made so frequently that we often forget we're making it. Realizing that everyone has a worldview is the first and arguably most important step in understanding anyone.

One thing to stress: there is nothing wrong with having a worldview. Our worldview should be as accurate as possible, but we don't need to apologize for being biased in a certain direction as long as we can admit we're biased and are open to changing our views.

Overall, good post. The points you've made need to be brought to our attention more often.

That is an old trick, I personally never did it. So what does this say about your world view? hehehe, Joking. Make sure you do not put them all in the same box. If you think about it, God provides us the means for everything, being wise is one thing, and attempting to cheat the system is quite another.
